THE Kouga Council will be considering the establishment of a new committee to improve the management of animals in the region’s urban areas.
A presentation in this regard was made by the local branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty against Animals (SPCA) at a recent Council meeting.
Kouga Community Services Portfolio Councillor Daniel Benson says the proposal would be discussed by his portfolio committee this week before being tabled to the Mayoral Committee and Council for final approval and implementation.
“There is tremendous room for improvement when it comes to the management of animals in our urban areas. This concerns both livestock and domestic animals,” he says.
“The proposed committee will bring together various roleplayers to help identify and address challenges in this regard.”
In terms of the proposal, the committee will include the municipal director and manager responsible for law enforcement, a designated ward committee member from each of the 15 wards, representatives from animal welfare organisations and the pound, an animal management training coordinator and other delegates as required.
“The Terms of Reference will be finalised once the establishment of the committee received the go-ahead. It is envisaged that education will play an important part of the scope,” Benson says.
He thanked the SPCA for their proactive approach to the challenges facing the municipality, communities and animal owners.
“We look forward to working closely with all roleplayers to devise and implement viable solutions.”
