Oo Friday, November 12, Jbay Animal Rescue Sanctuary was alerted by concerned neighbours to an alleged incident of animal cruelty that took place in Wavecrest, Jeffreys Bay.
Neighbours became concerned when they heard a gunshot within the residential area and thought that something had happened to one of the residents in the area. Police were immediately called to the scene.
An eyewitness, however, saw two women allegedly drag a stray dog into their home from across the street before hearing the dog yelp and a gunshot a few minutes later.
Jbay Animal Rescue was immediately alerted to the incident and upon their arrival and confrontation of the suspect, it was confirmed that the dog, which the home-owner accused of trying to get into his yard, had been shot.
According to Jbay Animal Rescue, however, the fences of the residence are too high for a dog to get over from outside. After statements from neighbours it was confirmed that the stray dog had often been seen around the area and some of them had fed it occasionally.
After confronting the perpetrator, Jbay Animal Rescue was met with hostility and opted to call law enforcement and the SPCA, who arrived with the police.
Luanda Renge, SPCA inspector, told Kouga Express that upon his arrival at the scene, he conferred with law enforcement and they were informed that the man who allegedly shot the dog was no longer home.
His wife, however handed over the carcass to the SPCA inspector, who is currently awaiting autopsy results. He did, however confirm that a bullet was retrieved from the animal’s head. A case of animal cruelty has been opened with the SAPS and the matter is currently under investigation.
