Kouga Municipality is supporting the highly-anticipated 2023 Adventure Racing World Championship hosted by Expedition Africa from October 19 to 28.

The Kouga Municipality, a steadfast supporter of adventure and community enrichment, is thrilled to announce its endorsement and support of the 2023 Adventure Racing World Championship (ARWC), hosted by Expedition Africa from October 19 to 28, marking the first time it graces African soil.

Heidi and Stephan Muller, the dynamic duo behind Expedition Africa, are avid adventure racing enthusiasts-turned-organisers, showcasing their passion for adventure sports and community engagement.

As a part of the AR World Series since 2012, Expedition Africa has demonstrated resilience and dedication in promoting adventure racing on a global scale.

“This globally-celebrated event is set to kick-off at Cape St Francis Resort, and we are honoured to be the host,” said Kouga executive mayor, Hattingh Bornman.

“We recognise the tremendous growth and preparation that have gone into making this milestone event a reality.”

The 800 kilometre adventure race promises to showcase the diverse landscapes and natural beauty of the Kouga region, making it an ideal setting for such an esteemed championship.

The municipality’s support, along with that of Cape St Francis Resort, has been instrumental in ensuring that the necessary infrastructure and expansive wilderness are available to enhance the participants’ race experience.

As the race ventures through Kouga and the Baviaans Mountains, participants will traverse wetlands, fynbos vegetation, dune fields, game reserves, mountain vistas, rivers, and private farms, providing a breathtaking glimpse of the region’s diverse landscapes.

This event not only highlights the municipality’s commitment to positioning our region as the adventure and sports capital in South Africa, but it also brings a significant boost to our local economy and tourism.

Residents and supporters are invited to help cheer for these exceptional athletes. The Flag Parade and Opening Ceremony at St Francis Links on Tuesday, October 17, at 14:00, a spectacle featuring dancers, a choir, and a local marimba band, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region.

For those unable to attend in person, live GPS tracking and engaging social media updates will provide real-time insights into the race. The championship promises to be a celebration of competition, excellence, and active participation, leaving a lasting legacy for adventure racing enthusiasts both locally and globally.

The award ceremony, a culmination of the adventurous journey, will take place at Cape St Francis Resort on October 28 at 16:30.
