KOUGA’S water mascot has been on an outreach to schools to encourage the region’s youngest residents to save water.
“While we have had some good rain this past month, the combined level of the supply dams remains low at just above 50%,” Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks said.
“Water restrictions are, therefore, still in place. We cannot become complacent now. Young and old are encouraged to continue to use water wisely.”
The water education programme was well received by local schools, with local artist Rochey “Stone” Walters adding fun and effectiveness to the message for the learners.
Most popular with the young ones was Kouga’s water mascot, Splash.
Hendricks said the municipality recognised learners as important stakeholders who also had a role to play in water conservation efforts and carrying the message further.
“Children also use water and are potential ambassadors for our awareness campaign.
“We are much pleased with the participation of the learners at all the schools we visi-ted and are grateful that the headmasters provided us with that platform,” he said.
Splash’s name was officially announced by Hendricks at the KIA Makietie Jeffreysbaai towards the end of September.
