THE firefighters and support staff were applauded by East Cape MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Fikile Xasa, who visited the area over the weekend.
“These brave men and women have proven their commitment to protecting the lives of people and the environment. I salute you for your dedication to saving lives,” he said.
- Community members, in conjunction with Dean Gilbert from Kouga Funerals and Vincent Tee from Caltex Wavelands which served as a disaster collection point, joined forces on Saturday to supply food and water to firefighters battling against the run-away fires in the Tsitsikamma region.
With the help of Whatsapp groups more than 3 000 items were collected at 11:30 and dropped off at Caltex Wavelands.
“The first bakkie left with goods left at 10:30, with the second to follow shortly,” says Tee.
“The third bakkie left at 18:00 with more than 1 200 items destined for the fatigue firefighters.
“A huge thank you to all of those who acted so swiftly to our call and donated so generously.”
