This Sunday, Father’s Day will be celebrated around the world to honour not only fathers, grandfathers and father figures, but also the role of fathers in society. Joané Azenha asked some Grade 9 learners why they think their fathers are great.

Nothando Mhlanga.

Nothando Mhlanga:“My dad always provides for us, even when it’s hard. He always does what is best for me and always tries to hear things from my perspective and listen to me before passing judgement.”

Mukhethwa Munyai.

Mukhethwa Munyai:“My dad is an inspiration to me because he works very hard. I have seen him work very hard, going from being without a job when I was young to now having his own business. He inspires me to always do my best.”

Kay-Dee Swartz.

Kay-Dee Swartz: “My dad is important to me because he cares about me and has always been there for me. He makes me feel better about myself when I am feeling low.”

GIFT IDEAS: Because, let’s face it, he has enough socks . . .

1. For the braaimaster

Today there are many different braai accessories available to the braai enthusiast. Items like braai tongs, cheeky aprons and signs to hang in the braai area are all great ideas to brighten up your braaiing dad’s day. The art of smoking meat is gaining popularity in South Africa, and different kinds of wood chips and smoking accessories are available for purchase.

2. For the foodie-dad

Try finding interesting and new spices and sauces. These days it is easy to find them at most supermarkets and delis. Think along the lines of infused olive oils, pesto and herb growing kits. Pair these with an interesting recipe book (buy one or print new recipes from the internet) and dad will be happily cooking for the rest of the year.

3. The coffee connoisseur

There are many interesting coffee products on the market today, many easily usable for that perfect single cup of goodness. Things like a mocha pot, aeropress or the simple but effective plunger could make good gifts for dad.
