A 55-year-old man from Paradise Beach, Jeffreys Bay briefly appeared at the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court yesterday, September 14 on charges of rape and sexual grooming of his daughter.

The father appeared alongside his 19-year-old stepson. They were both denied bail.

According to police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, the court appearance comes after a 17-year-old girl opened a case at Jeffreys Bay Police Station in August this year against her father and stepbrother.

Mother also arrested

Police have today, 15 September also arrested a 39-year-old woman on charges of Accessory after the fact, obstruction and defeating the ends of justice and failure to report sexual violation of children (Act 32 Sec 54 of 2007). She is believed to be the mother of the teenage girl.

She will appear in court on Monday, 19 September.

Nkohli said once the case was opened, a thorough investigation was done where pornographic materials were also confiscated as evidence.

“The two suspects (father and stepson) were nabbed early in September, and their first court appearance was on September 5,” said Nkohli.

He further said the three-day bail hearing concluded on Wednesday, September 14, which was subsequently denied.

“The case against the two men was postponed to October 19, for further investigation, and they are currently in custody,” said Nkholi.
