WITH six tennis courts and enough space to handle quite a few players each day, the Jeffreys Bay Tennis Club which is located in Tullip Street is open daily to locals and visitors alike.
According to Johan Reeder, club captain, the tennis club, which was initially located opposite the Jeffreys Bay Police Station, moved to its current location in 1976 and has been open to the public ever since.
He said due to COVID-19 restrictions, the club was not operating at full capacity for some time.
Fortunately, the tennis club welcomed a new committee in August this year and are now encouraging the public to make use of their six tennis courts, which are open throughout the day with the option of a night game under lights as well.
A small fee of R25 per person is charged for the use of the tennis courts.
Reeder said many locals and visitors to the town are not aware that Jeffreys Bay has a tennis club.
“It is important that people know that they are welcome to make use of our tennis courts which are in good condition,” said Reeder.
He further said that the tennis club is associated with the PE and District League where teams are entered to compete in both winter and summer leagues.
The club championship is also held once a year which includes an open class for all ages and over 60s as well.
In addition, the club participated in the Kouga Mayor’s Cup earlier this year which was a great success.
Paul Richmond, chairperson of the club, said, people are often surprised to hear that Jeffreys Bay has such a nice tennis club and of a good competitive standard.
He said he therefore wants the public to know that their tennis club participates in both social and competitive leagues.
Richmond said that the tennis club offers a lot to the community with at least four local schools making use of the tennis court and private lessons offered to children by facilitating coaches.
“Our club house is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays for club tennis, where a variety of beverages are available, including tea served to keep that great tradition in tennis going,” said Richmond.
“The club house is also available to the public for the purpose of hosting small events.”
