The NSRI in Jeffreys Bay and police divers are searching for a local man who went missing at sea after his kayak capsized at Walskipper in Paradise Beach on April 2.
According to Paul van Jaarsveld, NSRI Jeffreys Bay station commander, at about 17:10 on April 2, the NSRI Jeffreys Bay duty crew were activated following reports of a double sea kayak capsized near Walskipper with two local men on board.
He said the NSRI rescue craft Rescue 37 was launched while NSRI shore crew and the SA Police Services, Eastern Cape Government Health EMS and Kouga Municipal lifeguards were activated.
“On arrival at the scene it was determined that one man had managed to swim to shore and he was safe and not injured, while a 43-year-old man was still missing,” said Van Jaarsveld.
He said it appeared that the two men had been fishing on a double sea kayak when their craft was capsized by a wave.
Van Jaarsveld said an extensive sea and shoreline search revealed no signs of the missing man.
He further said they recovered the double sea kayak that was located semi-submerged.
Van Jaarsveld said police divers were alerted and they are continuing in an ongoing search.
“Our thoughts are with the family of the missing man in this difficult time,” said Van Jaarsveld.
