For the first time this year the Kouga region will host the Kouga 10s Rugby Sports Festival at Twisters Sports Field in Humansdorp, from December 15 to 17, where 1 000 athletes will compete in rugby and netball matches.
Marketing and general manager, Matt Davis, said that for the first time they will host a three-day sports festival, which they hope to have as an annual event during the December holiday period.
He said that the festival, which will be presented in collaboration with the Kouga Municipality, will see netball, men and women’s rugby, and junior rugby, as well as a legends cup event, take place.
“Kouga 10s will be hosting 40 rugby teams and 20 netball teams. The tournament will consist of over 1 000 athletes participating over the weekend,” said Davis.
He said that about 80 percent of the rugby players who will participate are from the Kouga Rugby Sub-union, but they will have teams joining from George and Gqeberha.
Davis said that as part of the first Kouga 10s’ Rugby Sports Festival, on the coastline of the Eastern Cape, they will debut the event in Humansdorp, an area that is often overlooked for major events.
He further said that with all the negativity and social economic challenges many are faced with, they would like to add value to the beautiful Kouga region and attract positivity.
“The community will have one of the first major sport and lifestyle festivals, increasing community access to participation, job creation through the event staffing, and through our stalls, to mention a few,” said Davis.
He said that the festival is open to all from 09:00 to 22:00.
Davis said that the festival is expected to feature top-notch sporting activities and various artists and celebrities.
He said that the three-day event will not only include sporting events such as netball and rugby 10s; instead spectators can also look forward to kids’ amusements, live entertainment, food trucks, and a gin garden.
Tickets for a day pass cost R40, R100 for a weekend pass and R200 for a VIP weekend pass.
Tickets can be purchased on Quicket or on the day at the event.
