The annual USN JBay Touchies which has been referred to as the “best Touchies Tournament in South Africa” will see 32 teams from all over the country battle it out on the Jeffreys Bay Main Beach on December 26 from 08:00.

Christo Botha, event organiser for USN, said that the tournament began in 2018 and is now a set event for JBay. He said that spectators can expect fast and furious touchies on the Main Beach with non-stop action on the two fields. In addition, there will be well-known local players in attendance such as Springbok fly-half, Manie Libbok, Springbok 7s’ player, Selvyn Davids, and Blue Bulls’ player, Sergeal Petersen.

“As part of the tournament, there will be two different leagues, pro-league and social league, for the holiday teams,” said Botha. As in previous years, he said that the highlight of the tournament will be the legends game before the final game between Kouga Municipality Legends and JBay Legends.

Botha said that there will be prizes and freebies which will be handed over throughout the tournament by all the sponsors involved. In addition, he said that the Christian Ellis Trophy for the referee of the tournament will once again be awarded.

An exciting touch to the event that cannot be missed will include the delivery of the trophy which will be dropped from 10 000 feet by the Skydive Jeffreys Bay. “The event is a celebration of the communities in the Kouga area and is well supported by local teams with the current pro-team champions, Eastern Province Coastal Touchies Association (EPCTA) Stormers, from Jeffreys Bay,” said Botha.

“It is also a JBay tradition that on the 26th touchies on JBay Main Beach so it’s important to keep the tradition alive.

”He said that the cost is R150 per team of eight players, but that it is limited to 32 teams.

“All ages, genders, and sizes are welcome to enter a team; however, they should do so soon to avoid disappointment since only 32 teams will participate in the tournament,” said Botha.

He said that the prize-giving and after party will be at Je’Vista Social Café in Jeffreys Bay which is another highlight of the event. Botha said that he would also like to thank all 30 sponsors and the Kouga Municipality for their contribution to the success of the event.
