After hosting a successful end of season celebration in January, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), Station 37 in Jeffreys Bay, is inviting potential volunteers to visit their base in Diaz Road, for their annual open day on February 11.

Station commander, Paul van Jaarsveld, said that their end of season celebration on January 25 at Lombardini Game Farm was a great success, with 110 people in attendance.

He said that they had managed to get sponsors to cover the entire event, and were able to make enough money from ticket sales to cover their expenses.

“We would like to thank all our sponsors who made the end of season event possible,” said Van Jaarsveld.

In addition to the great support, he said that they were able to sign up several volunteers for their junior academy, an NSRI programme for children between 12 and 16, which was launched at the event.

As part of their annual open day, Van Jaarsveld said that they are inviting candidates who are interested in becoming volunteers to visit their station on February 11, from 09:00 to 14:00.

He said that the aim of the open day is to recruit sea-going crew, shore-based crew, coast watchers, NSRI lifeguards, and junior academy members.

“Discover the exciting world of sea rescue, meet our crew, explore our assets, and understand the responsibilities at our sea rescue station,” said Van Jaarsveld.

He said that even though the junior academy caters for children between the ages of 12 and 16, the general crew and lifeguards are from 16 years and older.

Van Jaarsveld said that their station is to the south of Dolphin Beach, and that the building resembles a lighthouse.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn, grow, and make a difference,” said Van Jaarsveld.

“See you at the open day. Let’s build a stronger, safer community together.”
