THE South African Police Services in Jeffreys Bay have arrested one suspect for the alleged attempted murder of the two sons of DA municipal Ward 4 councillor, and mayoral committee member, Jaques Alexander. The pair was shot outside a tavern in Pellsrus on March 17.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, it is alleged that at about 00:45 on March 17, two brothers aged 19 and 24 were outside a tavern in Pellsrus in Jeffreys Bay when they were shot by an unknown suspect.

“Both brothers each sustained a gunshot wound to their stomachs and were rushed to hospital for treatment,” said Naidu.

The recent shooting incident comes two weeks after their father survived being shot multiple times on February 29 in broad daylight outside the Kouga Municipality main building in Da Gama Road, Jeffreys Bay, which Kouga Express previously reported on.

A day after the brothers were shot, Naidu said that one suspect was arrested on March 18 in Jeffreys Bay.

“The suspect, who is 23 years old, has been arrested for the alleged attempted murders of the two brothers,” said Naidu. “The incident is not politically motivated.”

Naidu further said the suspect appeared in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court on March 20.

Meanwhile, she said that the four suspects in the Jaques Alexander incident, who were arrested swiftly after the shooting incident on February 29, have been remanded in custody.

Luxolo Tyali, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, said that the four suspects, Mthumzi Lani, Lutho Mbatha, Luciano Jacobs, and Athenkosi Gidane, abandoned their bid for bail during their March 8 court appearance.

He further said that the case involving the four suspects has been remanded to April 19, for further investigation.
