Over the past weekend, the South African Police Services in Graaff-Reinet, Addo, Thornhill and Cookhouse within the Sarah Baartman District embarked on a high density operation which yielded good results with multiple arrests and the confiscation of three unlicensed firearms and drugs.
According to police spokesperson, Captain Marius McCarthy, police partook on foot patrols where they conducted stop and searches in their policing precincts.
He said that they were able to arrest 13 suspects aged between 16 and 52 years for crimes ranging from possession of drugs, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, business robbery and possession of suspected stolen property.
“Dangerous weapons and drugs (mandrax, tik) to the street value of more than R70 000 were confiscated as part of crime prevention. During the operation, police recovered at least three unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” said McCarthy.
He said the suspects will appear in different magistrate courts on July 22.
Sarah Baartman District Commissioner Major General Zolani Xawuka applauded the members for their dedication to ensuring that citizens are safe and secure.
“We will keep on doing operations and remove unlicensed firearms and drugs from the streets,” said Xawuka.
