At just 10-years-old, Isabella Esterhuyse from East London was diagnosed with Sarcoma, a rare soft tissue cancer, and since her diagnosis in April she has undergone an aggressive form of chemotherapy treatment, and radiation.
To raise the much-needed funds for this brave little girl’s 51-week cancer treatment plan, the Jeffreys Bay Bowling Club hosted a successful “Bowling for Bella” fundraising event on August 1, with family member, Charmain Kirstein, co-ordinating the event.
Kirstein said that since Bella’s diagnosis, it has been incredibly challenging emotionally and physically for Isabella’s parents, Tara-Lee and Jaques.
However, she said they are committed to supporting her through every step of the treatment plan, relying on the expertise of her medical team, and the unwavering support of their family and friends to get them through this difficult chapter.
When describing Esterhuyse’s personality, Kirstein said she is a very happy little girl, and regardless of the difficulties since her cancer diagnosis, she always has a smile on her face.
She further said she loves dancing, playing hockey, and drawing beautiful art pieces.
Kirstein said Esterhuyse also has a special fascination with butterflies and enjoys admiring their beauty.
“When I speak to her, we always chat about butterflies, and I often remind her that her cancer journey is like the life of a butterfly, where we can see how it goes through a difficult experience transforming from a caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly,” she said.
To assist Esterhuyse’s family with the enormous financial costs involved, Kirtein, a member of the Jeffreys Bay Bowling Club, requested assistance from the club to host their first fundraising event, “Bowling for Bella”.
Inviting participants to dress in “butterfly colours”, Kirstein said the event was a huge success, and they raised a substantial amount of money which will contribute towards Esterhuyse’s medical expenses.
“The event consisted of teams dressed in happy, bright colours, and playing bowls for Isabella. Each team had an entry fee with great prizes won, and plenty of lucky number draws,” said Kirstein.
“There was no competitiveness involved; instead the participants were all there to have fun.”
Kirstein expressed her gratitude to the Jeffreys Bay Bowling Club and its dedicated leadership, including the club president, Christo Coetzee, and vice-president ,Petro Toerien, for their invaluable support and assistance in making the event a success.
She also extended special thanks to Charlie Bakker, who provided the music and entertainment.
