The Kouga branch unit of the South African Defence Force Association (SADFA) is celebrating a job well done after hosting a highly successful golf day at the Jeffreys Bay Golf Club on August 3.

This event was a fundraiser to benefit retired military veterans in the Kouga region.

As previously reported, Deon Wessels, the treasurer of Kouga’s SADFA, said they were in desperate need of additional funding to take care of the approximately 120 military veterans at their Jeffreys Bay branch.

The association helps its members with regular food parcels and assists with medical bills.

Since their members were not able to afford their monthly subscription fee, Wessels said they had to seek financial assistance elsewhere, which was the inspiration behind hosting their second annual golf day fundraiser.

Despite cutting their profit margin by keeping their entry fee at last year’s amount, he said they were able to secure sponsorships from a number of local businesses.

“We only had 50 entries, 16 fewer than last year’s, but we had loads of donations thanks to our generous sponsors,” said Wessels.

“The response was amazing, and we are thankful to all those who participated and donated towards the raffle.”

Some of the sponsors included 100 craft beers donated by Jack Black, food from CJ Sandblasting, and Property Time donated sherry on the first hole.

Sunette and Derek Schult also generously prepared the food, while Bruce Butcher distributed the beer.

Wessels said that through the event they were able to raise a good amount of money and accumulate many vouchers for the retired veterans.

“The SANDF Military Veterans wishes to express our profound gratitude for the sponsorship from numerous businesses around the Jeffreys Bay area,” said Wessels.

“We salute and thank you all.”

The winners of the golf event in the men’s division were Regardt Heydenrach and club captain, Johan Greyling, while Ronel du Toit won in the women’s division.
