For the next four months, soccer teams throughout the Kouga region will battle it out in the Kouga Local Football Association’s MTO Score Super League, in the hope that they will be promoted to the highly competitive Hollywood Bets Regional League.
According to Mongezi Khatshiwe, chairperson of Kouga Local Football Association, the Super League plays a vital role in promoting community unity, social cohesion, and essential life skills, such as teamwork and discipline.
Additionally, he said the Super League serves as a crucial stepping stone, preparing the promoted team for the challenges of the Hollywood Bets Regional League.
Khatshiwe described the Super League as a “soccer development movement”, providing a platform for growth and development for all players, with a special focus on u/21 talent through mandatory participation in each match.
He said the MTO Score Super League, which kicked off on September 8 and runs until February 2025, features 10 teams from Humansdorp, Sea Vista, Jeffreys Bay, Thornhill, Loerie and Hankey.
Clubs participating in the league are City Pirates, Rising Stars, Young Stars, Thornhill United Juniors, Super Eagles, Kouga, Hankey Town, St Francis Links, Kings and Hotspurs.
“Spectators can look forward to top-tier teams competing against each other, unpredictable outcomes and upsets, emerging talents and breakout performances,” said Khatshiwe.
He further said they are thrilled to announce that the MTO Score Super League will become an annual fixture in Kouga, solidifying its position as a premier football event in the region.
Khatshiwe said the MTO Score Super League soccer matches will take place every Sunday at various venues across the region.
The upcoming schedule includes two matches in Humansdorp on October 6, at a venue to be confirmed, and three matches at Phillipsville Sports Field in Hankey.
Admission to all games is free, with the final match expected to take place in February 2025.
The prizes include a trophy, gold medals and R9 000 for the winning team, a trophy, silver medals and R7 000 for second place, a trophy, bronze medals and R6 000 for third place, and R4 750 for fourth place.
Khatshiwe said they are grateful for MTO Group’s donation of prize money and Score Energy Drinks Company’s generous sponsorship of playing kit for each team.
“The Kouga Local Football Association would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Score Energy Drinks Company for their generous support of sponsoring 10 kits for our teams,” said Khatshiwe.
“Special thanks to Rochey Walters, who is a representative for Score. Your support has made a significant impact on our players, providing them with the necessary kits to excel in their passion for football. Your contribution embodies the spirit of community and sportsmanship that the Kouga Local Football Association values. We appreciate your investment in the development of our youth, and we look forward to your continued partnership,” he said.
