KOUGA – Residents in the Kouga and Kou-Kamma areas have been urged to remain on high alert following a Level 8 warning for disruptive rain issued by the South African Weather Service.

The warning is valid from 5 May at 10:00 until 7 May at 23:59, with forecasts indicating significant rainfall that could lead to widespread flooding.

According to the weather service, a cut-off low system is expected to pass over the Eastern Cape, bringing showers and thundershowers across the province.

Undercutting is anticipated, which may result in heavy downpours along the coast and adjacent interior, particularly along the South Coast.

The Kouga Local Municipality confirmed that the region falls under an Orange Level 8 warning, cautioning residents about the heightened risk of flooding of settlements, roads, low-lying areas and bridges.

Potential impacts include damage to infrastructure, dangerous driving conditions due to slippery roads and reduced visibility, as well as the possibility of mudslides, rockfalls and danger to life.

“Municipal teams have been deployed and are actively working to reduce risks. This includes clearing stormwater channels to improve water flow, placing sandbags in identified areas, and deploying additional suction tankers to assist with the removal of excess water and improve drainage,” the municipality said.

The weather service has advised residents to monitor weather updates via radio and social media, postpone travel where possible, and avoid crossing rivers or swollen streams.

They are also encouraged to identify safe areas to store valuable items away from potential floodwaters, remain vigilant, and take the necessary precautions to safeguard lives and property.
