HUMANSDORP – The Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) livestock vaccination campaign in the affected areas in the Kouga region is progressing well, with close to 1,212 animals vaccinated in Kruisfontein and 360 in KwaNomzamo to date.

According to the Kouga Municipality, vaccination teams are currently busy vaccinating livestock on farms surrounding KwaNomzamo, and additional vaccines are expected to arrive next week to ensure the programme continues without interruption.

Farmers in KwaNomzamo whose livestock have not yet been vaccinated are urged to urgently contact the Kouga Call Centre at 042 200 2200 or via WhatsApp at 081 760 9183 to arrange for vaccination.

“Confirmed cases have been identified in Kruisfontein, KwaNomzamo, and on a farm bordering KwaNomzamo. In addition, suspected cases have been identified on a dairy farm north of Kruisfontein, which are still awaiting confirmation,” a statement by the municipality highlighted.

The municipality has indicated that sanitation points remain fully operational to help prevent further spread of the disease.

These are located at the corner of the gravel road leading to Oyster Bay and at the corner of Felix Street and Philip Street in Kruisfontein.

Designated containment sites also remain operational within the affected zones.

“Any additional sick animals will be relocated to these areas if necessary. Ongoing monitoring and surveillance in neighbouring communities will ensure early detection and a swift response to any potential new cases,” the statement said.

According to the municipality, affected farmers are reminded that strict movement control measures remain in place.

Livestock must be confined at all times and may not be left unattended.

Movement into or out of the affected areas is strictly prohibited, and transportation within or beyond affected zones may only occur with official approval and the necessary documentation.

The municipality indicated that non-compliance will result in enforcement action, including fines.

Residents are urged to report any roaming livestock immediately to the Kouga Call Centre at 042 200 2200 or via WhatsApp at 081 760 9183.
