JEFFREYS BAY – In a heartwarming show of community spirit and environmental awareness, the Marina Eagles, a local youth soccer team, have turned trash into triumph by collecting recyclables to fund their brand-new soccer kit.

The team’s project involved gathering cans, bottles and plastic items from residents and businesses.

Their dedication to both sport and sustainability paid off when they raised enough money through recycling to purchase their much-needed uniforms and soccer boots.

Speaking on behalf of the team, club manager Mzikayise Eric George said, “We’re thrilled to see our efforts pay off.”

“This kit isn’t just a uniform, it’s a symbol of teamwork and what we can achieve when we work together toward a common goal.”

Additional members from the team present at the handover were coach Melisizwe Thundube and team captain Avethandwa Gorden.

The initiative has drawn praise from community members and local organisations who admire the team’s commitment to environmental responsibility and youth empowerment.

Player Khanyisile Niwa said, “Collecting recyclables was a real team effort.”

“We’re proud to have done something positive for the environment while earning the equipment we need to perform our best on the field.”

The Marina Eagles extended heartfelt thanks to Peter and Susan Baumgartner from Germany for their generous donation of the new kits, which helped make the team’s dream a reality.

They also thanked Carry Doyle for providing training equipment and soccer balls, and Marietta Buchanan and her family for their ongoing support and regular recycling contributions.

Special appreciation was given to Clair Hill at the JBay Recycling Project for helping to source and coordinate the new kit, making the purchase possible with funds earned through recycling.
