KOUGA – Kouga Local Municipality recently completed major upgrades to two key substations – with a combined investment of R34 million – enhancing the electrical infrastructure to support both current and future development in Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp.

Boskloof

The Boskloof Substation in Humansdorp was upgraded from 6.3MVA to 15MVA at a cost of R22 million, significantly improving the electrical supply in the area – equivalent to powering over 2,500 60-watt light bulbs.

This upgrade will, furthermore, accommodate new housing units planned under the KwaNomzamo housing project, part of the ten human settlement projects approved by the Department of Human Settlements in 2009, as well as additional future growth.

Ocean View

Enhancing the overall electricity supply in the area, the Ocean View Substation in Jeffreys Bay was also expanded from 5.6MVA to 14MVA at a cost of R12 million, providing sufficient capacity to power 233,333 60-watt light bulbs.

The upgrade will, in addition, deliver electricity to the 1,500 planned units in the Ocean View housing project – also one of the ten human settlement projects approved by the Department of Human Settlements in 2009.

Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, said the upgrades are critical for the municipality’s growth and service delivery. “These projects not only provide reliable electricity to our communities but also lay the foundation for sustainable development in Humansdorp and Jeffreys Bay,” he said.

“Investing in our electricity infrastructure ensures that as our towns grow, residents and businesses can rely on a stable and efficient power supply, supporting both livelihoods and economic development.”
