A privately-owned pound has been established at Farm 865 Mooiuitzicht on the R102 in Jeffreys Bay, and in compliance with the legislative provisions pertaining to the establishment and operation of a pound.
The pound spans 4.5 hectares and provides grazing camps to accommodate different livestock. Five larger camps are available for cattle, donkeys, horses, and ostriches, while six smaller camps have been set aside for sheep, goats, and pigs.
Each camp is fully equipped with water troughs, feeding bowls, and natural shade, while the smaller enclosures also include shelter for added protection.
In addition, a separate grazing area with three handling camps has been developed, featuring facilities where medication can be administered and injured animals can be treated.
Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, welcomed the establishment of the pound, describing it as a vital intervention for both public safety and the well-being of animals.
“It is hoped that the pound will go a long way towards reducing road accidents that are caused by stray animals,” said Bornman. “The facility will also play an important role in the fight against stock theft, as stray animals will now have a secure place to be kept until claimed by their owners.”
Bornman further emphasised that while the pound is an important safeguard, livestock owners must take responsibility for their animals. “Ultimately, it is the responsibility of livestock owners to ensure their animals do not roam unattended, damage other people’s property, or wander onto roads where they can cause serious accidents.”
Residents can report stray animals at the Kouga Call Centre at 042 200 2200 or 081 760 9183 (WhatsApp only).
