Hankey – A freak accident involving a runaway truck claimed the life of a 32-year-old female pedestrian and left 20 others injured in Hankey on 13 August, in what can only be described as a bizarre chain of events that ended with the heavy vehicle crashing into a residential home.
According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, it is alleged that on 13 August at about 17:30, the brakes of a truck that was carrying farm workers failed on Metlerkamp Road, Hankey.
“It is believed that the driver lost control, causing a collision with a bakkie, which in turn struck another bakkie. The truck then slammed into a house and came to a halt,” said Nkohli.
He said that a case of culpable homicide has been opened for further investigation.
