HUMANSDORP – SPCA Assisi was founded in 1982 by Frank Richter, who recognised the need for an animal welfare organisation in the Kouga region.
As one of over 70 SPCAs in South Africa and eight in the Eastern Cape, SPCA Assisi is uniquely named after St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of domestic animals.
SPCA Assisi’s mandate
While they may receive requests to intervene in various situations, their focus is on preventing animal cruelty and enforcing the Animals Protection Act. With limited resources and a vast territory to cover, their inspectors prioritise cases that involve contraventions of the Act, ensuring they make the most impact in protecting animals.
Their area of authority is the Kouga in the Eastern Cape, which covers 2,700 km². SPCA Assisi has one inspector covering this area.
Their committee of seven passionate animal lovers put their heart and soul into the sometimes ungrateful work they do.
Their dedicated team, led by Inspector Marisa Kruger, works tirelessly to:
· Attend to lost and abused animals,
· Investigate cruelty cases,
· Promote sterilisation programmes,
· Collect potential sterilisation candidates, return them home,
· Provide community outreach initiatives.
At SPCA Assisi, they are dedicated to giving animals a second chance in life. Their perfect matchmaker, Jayne Wright, is passionate about finding forever homes for their furry friends. Between April 2024 and March 2025, Wright successfully rehomed 91 dogs, 35 cats and even a goat!
SPCA Assisi’s veterinary clinic, led by Dr Ardri Kriel, is dedicated to providing essential healthcare to animals in need.
