Khayelitsha residents blockaded Pambo Street in Komani on Tuesday, July 5 following a three-week electricity outage.

Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality (EMLM) has been under fire by communities for its failure to provide a stable electricity supply.

Last week Ezibeleni residents stormed a Chris Hani District Municipality council meeting demanding their electricity be restored.

On Saturday, July 2 the same residents blockaded the N6 between Komani and Cathcart for about two hours.

Khayelitsha resident Nathi Kompela said the municipality was being evasive.

“The problem is that they (EMLM) are lying to us. They keep saying ‘tomorrow’ but nothing happens. We have been without electricity for three weeks. Paraffin is very expensive, food is rotten and we had to cook meat meant for the month in a couple of days,” she said.

Young people were gathered around the fires singing struggle songs while some people watched from the safety of their yards.

The fires started around 09:00 but by 11:00 police had not arrived. Ward councillor Vuyiseka Bomela had not responded at the time of writing.
