Damaging floods have once again hit Komani from heavy rain that fell overnight, causing road closures in the early hours of this morning, February 18.
According to the Chris Hani District Municipality, most crossings in the area are submerged. Two cars were also swept away by a strong current along Owen/Sprigg Street into Komani River.
“Rescue teams managed to save two occupants whilst one is reportedly missing. A chopper has been requested to assist with the search. Specialised rescue services have been activated to search for the missing person whose identity is known. Motorists are warned to be extremely cautious as some of the roads are inaccessible,” the municipality said.
In two videos supplied by the Department of Transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, motorists travelling in and towards the town were advised to avoid the town and rather stay away.
In the videos, taken at 03:00, a car could also be seen stuck in the water, covered almost to its roof. Emergency services were on the scene and after the water eventually subsided to a certain extent around 07:00 this morning, clearing up of the roads started as some trees have also been uprooted.
The areas of Silvertown and Thulandivile Informal Settlements, are once more, highly affected. The extent of damages and people affected is yet to be determined as teams are on the ground. Rescue teams are currently busy with evacuations. The Disaster Provincial office is also on site updates will be provided.
