Edlelweni Public Primary School’s junior boys’ choir is flying the Chris Hani West education district flag high after placing third at the provincial music competition in Gqeberha on May 26.
The Mlungisi township school in Komani comprises of boys aged between 9 and 11.
The Thozama Rodolo conducted choir placed first at the district level, obtaining the bragging rights to represent at provincial level.
School principal Zukisani Sondlo said it was neck and neck, even at the provincial leg of the competition, with his boys scoring 70%. The two schools ahead of them scored 74% and 73% respectively.
The school is a well of music with Sondlo saying other choirs of the school placed second at the district level.
Nodumo Mgolodela and Vuyiseka Nojekwa are the other music conductors at the school.
“This achievement means a lot to us as we come from two years of non-performance due to Covid-19 and for the boys to go as far as this is appreciated. We are trying to develop young minds. This is also evidence that hard work pays off as the conductor and the choir went the extra mile in preparing for these competitions,” Sondlo said.
The 54-member boys choir went melodic with the 1990 international hit by Bette Midler “From a Distance”.
Sondlo said the win was proof that sacrifice, determination and time management paid off for the school.
“The school being well represented at the provincial level is the key success factor. The team effort motivated by dedication demonstrated school commitment. And the support from the parents and SGB have been tremendous. In essence, the sacrifice from all the role players indicate that as a team, we are able to prosper,” Sondlo said.
