Nestled in the heart of the Karoo, the quaint town of Kwanojoli, formerly Somerset East, is swiftly gaining recognition as a vibrant arts hub, defying its small size and rural roots.

This transformation will be on full display during the much-anticipated Walter Battiss Festival from July 5 to 7.

Festival organiser, Christina Groves, said that Battiss, a celebrated artist who boldly defied apartheid-era restrictions on artistic expression, would be honored throughout the festival.

Battiss was a founding member of the influential art movement known as the New Group which aimed to break away from European artistic conventions and explore uniquely South African identities and experiences.

“Battiss was known for his innovative use of color, intricate patterns, and imaginative compositions which set him apart and earned him international recognition. His legacy continues to inspire new generations of artists,” said Groves.

With this in mind, Kwanojoli’s burgeoning contemporary art scene will also be on display.

The festival’s activities include a Hop-On-Hop-Off tour through the town, an arts and crafts market, live entertainment, art sessions and workshops, and a picturesque picnic at a historic water mill.

A notable highlight will be an exhibition by acclaimed artist, Sandra Thomas, who draws much of her inspiration from the Albany Thickets, an ecoregion of dense spiny scrubland and low forest concentrated in the Eastern Cape.

Kwanojoli’s cultural significance extends beyond visual arts and literature.

The town served as the backdrop for Jamil Qubeka’s acclaimed film, “Sew the Winter into My Skin,” now available on Netflix, further spotlighting the town’s rich history.

In recent years, the town has also become home to many creative businesses, including the renowned animation studio Piehole.TV, leatherwork designers, Faber Collective, and Canadian photographer, Jeff Bergen.

Adding to its artistic allure is the Jakes Gerwel Writers House, a sanctuary for writers seeking inspiration and solitude to create literary works.

The local art society also plays a crucial role in nurturing talent and promoting the visual arts within the community.

“The Walter Battiss Festival promises a weekend of artistic exploration and celebration, drawing visitors from near and far to experience Kwanojoli’s rich cultural tapestry,” said Groves.

“As the town continues to evolve into a premier arts destination, this festival stands as a testament to its vibrant and enduring creative spirit. Visitors and locals alike can look forward to an immersive experience that celebrates the town’s unique artistic legacy and contemporary creative energy.”
