On May 4, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport advised motorists that multiple passes in the province have been closed due to heavy snow.

Spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Unathi Binqose said that the following passes, Penhoek Pass on the N6 between Komani and Jamestown, Barkly Pass on the R58, and Wapadsberg Pass on the R61 between Graaff-Reinet, are closed to traffic due to heavy snow.

“We recommend that motorists either delay their travel time or use alternative routes,” said Binqose.

He further said that Lootsberg Pass on the N9-6 between Graaff-Reinet and Middleburg, is still drivable but remains wet.

Binqose said that motorists should proceed with caution.

“Please drive with caution and plan accordingly for potential delays in all our mountain passes.”
