The high rate of water and sanitation infrastructure
vandalism has led to unplanned water supply interruptions and recurring sewer
spillages around the Chris Hani District municipal (CHDM) area.

Spokesperson Bulelwa Ganyaza said CHDM was currently experiencing high incidents of theft and
vandalism of water and sanitation infrastructure, as targeted by vandals
throughout the district.

“This has resulted in massive infrastructure damages, prompting unplanned water supply interruptions and recurring sewer spillages in
different parts of the district. The incidents also leave permanent damage to
infrastructure and adversely affect the district municipality’s finances due to
costly replacement and repairs,” she said.

Vandalism of Municipal Infrastructure hampers the district
municipality’s efforts of providing quality services and it also negatively
impacts communities that are inconvenienced and deprived of basic services due
to this.

Who Can Tell village in Whittlesea is one of the hardest hit
areas as a borehole supplying the area with water was recently ransacked, with
major elements removed and some damaged.

“The area is currently without
water supply following this incident. However, the district arranged water
carting although this provision is never adequate. This situation will prevail
until repairs are effected and processes are underway.”

Ganyaza said vandals also caused destruction at the Mlungisi
pump station, damaging fencing and the gate.

“CHDM strongly condemns the continuous vandalism of
Municipal Infrastructure. Whilst the municipality continues to conduct
awareness campaigns, we once more appeal to the community to safeguard
infrastructure set up for their benefit and report any acts of vandalism and
theft to our Customer Care line 0800 100 100,” she said.
