Two people have died, and one sustained serious injuries in an accident involving two trucks on the N10 road just outside Cradock towards Middleburg on November 28.
Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the accident occurred at about 19:30 on November 28, under poor visibility due to smoke-filled conditions resulting from veld fires.
“The driver of the one truck was the only person in the vehicle and was travelling from the Middelburg direction when it collided with another truck carrying two passengers travelling from the Cradock direction,” said Binqose.
He stated that both passengers in the truck travelling from Cradock died on the scene, while the driver of the other truck sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Cradock Provincial Hospital for further medical assistance.
“Poor visibility is a suspected cause of the accident,” said Binqose.
He further mentioned that a culpable homicide case has been opened with Cradock SAPS for further investigations.
Eastern Cape Transport MEC, Xolile Nqatha, has expressed his condolences to the families who have lost loved ones in the accident and has wished the patient recovering in hospital a speedy recovery.
As the busy road season approaches, he has called on every road user to be extra vigilant during this period.
