“AMID the drought, which is such a burden on all of us, the farmers’ market was a wonderful opportunity for families and the community to get together and enjoy Karoo hospitality at its best.”
So said Karen McEwan, organiser of the first ever Fairfield Farmers’ Market, which was held last Saturday. An estimated 200 people attended the event and were treated to top class refreshments as well as entertainment.
“We had 28 stalls on the day, offering special homemade eats like lamb roosterkoek, spicy chicken cous-cous salad and gourmet boerie rolls with home made cheese grillers. The lamb pizza sold out quickly, and market goers could wash it down with ginger beer, pomegranate juice or freshly brewed coffee. Sweet treats included brownies, fudge and peppermint crisp tart,” said Karen.
Children were quickly drawn in by the entertaining skills of Jaco Spies, the creative force behind DrumAbility, who told stories and invited children to join in the action by providing drums with which to dramatise the story telling. Pony rides, a jumping castle and garden games on the lush lawns under the sprawling trees made for a fun-filled day for busy little bodies.
Another highlight for many garden lovers was the opportunity to take a leisurely stroll through Karen’s organic vegetable and herb garden, and it no doubt inspired good sales of organic seeds that were on offer.
Loads of free giveaways, plants and gardening goods sponsored by Blue Magnolia nursery in Graaff-Reinet made it worth the while to travel to the Market, and people came from as far as Port Elizabeth, Cradock and Nieu-Bethesda to support the event.
“We were pleasantly surprised with the turnout of the day,” said Karen, who also thanked all for their support.
- The next Farmers’ Market will take place towards the end of summer on March 28, 2020.
