ANOTHER pensioner, Mzayifani Matyila (73) from Magaleni, suffered a head injury when bricks from his flat tumbled down on him. He had to vacate his roofless home with damaged furniture.
Komani-Karoo Express interviewed Raymond Mhlaba Municipality Mayor, Bandile Ketelo, at the scene at Magaleni on Saturday morning as he was busy assessing the situation with his team.
“This is a real disaster. We feel for the families who are already suffering under the severe drought.”
Ketelo went on to say that the province had a disaster management team that would be visiting all the affected areas. He further said that there was a possibility that MEC Xolile Nqata would also be visiting the disaster areas.
Ketelo also said that Eskom had cut the electricity to the affected areas for safety precautions.
Komani-Karoo Express counted at least 15 families that were left homeless in Lower Blinkwater alone and even more in Magaleni, excluding the other areas.
According to Ketelo, the Department of Human Settlements, Social Development and ADM would meet this week in order to determine relief for all the affected families.
