A NEUROSCIENCE expert, Clare Josa, from the UK, talked to the Graaff-Reinet Chamber of Commerce about the power of self-talk and shared tips and tools on how to turn one’s inner critic into one’s biggest cheerleader.

Members and guests of the Chamber of Commerce had an enlightening Monday morning with Josa, an author of eight books like Dare to Dream Bigger and Ditching Imposer Syndrome.

Josa specialises in helping business leaders and high-achievers to clear secret self-sabotage thoughts and other self-imposed glass ceilings.

“The way we talk to ourselves governs our happiness and what we achieve in life, even though most of us aren’t aware that our self-talk is there,” Josa said.

She also warned against “resilience at all costs”, a trait many employers expect of their employees.

“When we forcibly jump from negative to positive thinking without going through a neutral spot, it will bring on a back-fire effect at some stage,” Josa said.

“Instead, it is important to ask yourself what needs to be done to change a toxic situation. Positive thinking needs to start from a place of calm, not fear and worry.”

Josa, also an expert on yoga and meditation, taught attendees the value of breathing as a “reset button” as well as the importance of celebrating micro-wins and thoughts of gratitude.

Josa told Komani-Karoo Express that she fell in love with the Eastern Cape after accompanying her son to Graaff-Reinet to get him settled while on a student exchange programme.

“I am totally amazed at what this community has achieved in such a remote and isolated setting,” Josa said.

“In the midst of the chaos and fear surrounding the threats posed by the Coronavirus, it is this same sense of community, this realisation that ‘we only have each other’, that will see you through the tough times.”
