A 26-year-old man was arrested on Sunday, 11 July for the murder of Karin Marais from Graaff-Reinet.

Marais (57), the wife of Dr. Albertus ‘Dakman’ Marais, was attacked at her home in Somerset Street on the morning of 8 July.

According to Captain Bradley Rawlinson, police spokesperson, the suspect entered the Marais residence around 06:00 last week when he was spotted by Marais.

“Marais, together with her daughter, managed to chase him outside. A struggle ensued where she was stabbed in her shoulder. The suspect ran away,” Rawlinson said.

Marais was taken to hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries.

The suspect will appear in the Graaff-Reinet Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of murder.

A service will be held for Marais at the Karoo Community Church on Tuesday, 13 July at 10:00. The service will be livestreamed due to lockdown regulations.
