This past weekend, SOSO Cares, a local nonprofit organisation led by Sonwabile Dikeni, hosted a highly anticipated youth event aimed at raising awareness about drug abuse and crime prevention in KwaNonzame, Middleburg.
The event brought together kids and teenagers from across the community for a day filled with street soccer games, gumboot dancers, staged plays, skill-building activities, and life-changing conversations.
Held at Phithi Stadium, the gathering drew local families, educators, and community leaders, fostering an atmosphere of encouragement, education, and unity.
With a mission to make a positive impact in the lives of young people, SOSO Cares—under its official registration, REF: 312-647 NPO—organised this event to provide youth with healthy, constructive outlets.
By focusing on street soccer, the organisation was able to engage young participants in a sport that promotes teamwork, resilience, and discipline, offering an alternative to risky behaviours.
“We believe that if we can keep kids active and engaged, we can keep them away from drugs and crime,” said Dikeni, founder of SOSO Cares.
“This event was all about giving young people a space to feel supported, to show their talents, and to find positive role models in their own community.”
The event was made possible through the generous support of various sponsors, including First National Bank and SPAR Middleburg.
Each sponsor contributed in unique ways, from providing refreshments to promotional items, making the event a true community effort.
In addition to the games, there were motivational talks from local leaders, Correctional Services, SAPS, and ex-users who shared personal stories about overcoming challenges, avoiding drugs, and leading healthy lifestyles.
The emphasis on community-driven support was clear, as SOSO Cares created a welcoming environment where young people could ask questions, discuss their dreams, and receive guidance.
With strong support from local businesses and a devoted team, SOSO Cares continues to expand its reach and impact in Middleburg.
This weekend’s event was a testament to the power of community collaboration and the inspiring influence one organisation can have in shaping a brighter future for the youth of South Africa.
