ON Saturday, November 9, a second effort was made to clean up dead fish from the dry Nqweba dam.
A total of 36 625 fish had been removed two weeks previously, and it was thought that 75% of the decaying fish had been taken care of.
On Dam Day 2, however, 120 volunteers convened at the Boat Club area, and a whopping 38 000 more fish were collected in about 1 200 bags.
That brought the total number of fish collected over the two days to almost 75 000.
“The reason we were able to collect even more fish than on Day 1, despite having only a quarter of the manpower, is that two families had brought their quad bikes with trailers.
“This meant that volunteers could just fill bags with fish and leave them to be collected by the quad bikes instead of having to haul the bags one or two kilometres to the collection point from where the municipal trucks took it away,” said Pastor Dolan Cochrane, of the Assembly Church, who organised the two dam days.
A note of thanks has gone to Montego, Botha’s Garage, Camdeboo Vet, Relay Emergency Services, SANParks, Beyers Naudé Local Municipality and the families Loock, Wilma, Murray, and Prinsloo.
