ILINGE-BORN boxer, Luvuyo Sizani, won the vacant African Boxing Union light heavyweight title on Sunday, scoring a one-sided 10-round points decision over Jackson Masamba from the Democratic Republic of Congo at the Mdantsane Indoor Centre.

The fight between Sizani and Masamba was the main supporting bout in the Fireworks Promotions event.

The former National Elite Boxing League champion took command from the opening bell and, in round two, smashed Masamba into the ropes where the DRC fighter was almost counted out.

Sizani dominated the National Boxing Championships, winning the medal for the fifth time. He also won the medal in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. In 2016, he did not take part in the National Boxing Championships because he was representing South Africa in Baku, Azerbaijan.

“I am very happy about winning this title. It will open doors for me in the boxing industry and enables me to provide for my family back home,” said Sizani.

“I have to dedicate this title to my mother and sisters at home, who supported me throughout this journey.”

He is also a bronze medallist in the Commonwealth Games hosted by Scotland in 2014.

“I grew up in a very disadvantaged township (Ilinge), and did not have luxury equipment at my disposal. We had to fight for everything,” said Sizani, who left Tiger Boxing Club of Ilinge in 2009 to join the High Performance Centre in PE.
