Komani-based side Seven Stars FC came home with one point this past weekend in their opening game of the Provincial ABC Motsepe League against former professional side Bizana Pondo Chiefs.
The game was played in a fully packed Mphuthumi Mafumbatha Stadium in Mbizana. The R60 million sports field was officially opened by Winnie Madikizela Mandela Local Municipality Mayor, Daniswa Mafumbatha, this year.
The two teams played an entertaining football on the day with Seven Stars dominating the better part of the game and produced the first notable chance to make the home team uncomfortable.
Seven Stars goals returned from last season with top goal scorer Sheydon Rowland and former Amavarara attacking midfielder Brenton Jackson.
Seven Stars Head Coach Yongama Willie Kepkey said it is a positive sign to score two goals in those conditions.
“We were playing in a fully packed stadium far away from home against a former professional side and the pride of Mbizana that tells you the type of reception we got from the stadium. I am proud of the boys, this is only our second season in the ABC Motsepe League and I am happy with what we got from that game,” said Kepkey.
Seven Stars starts the 2022/23 ABC Motsepe League season with a new sponsor after receiving a major financial boost from Twizza which will help the team’s performance.
Stars will play their first home game at the Dampy Adams Sports Complex in Komani this coming weekend when they welcome newcomers from Mount Ayliff AmaXesibe FC. AmaXesibe bought the status of last season’s Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe league champions Spears of the Nation FC.
After failing to get promoted to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, Spear of the Nation decided to sell their status and the side from Mount Ayliff who was campaigning in the SAB Regional League was quick to buy the status.
