KOMANI’s Seven Stars Football Club cleared the ABC Motsepe League relegation bar by a mere three positions and five points, when they managed a 2-1 win against Highbury Football Club in the last match of the season at the Dumpy Adams Sports Complex in Komani on Saturday.

Stars started the season slowly, winning only one of their first seven games of the season, picking up crucial points against FC Siyanda but faltering along the way. Things got better for the team after they appointed well experienced coach, Mondli Funani, who collected 13 points in the nine games the team played under his guidance.

The team from Aloevale managed to accumulate 17 points from 16 matches of the league winning five matches, drawing, and losing nine to finish the season in sixth position.

Funani said he is happy and relieved that he saved the team from relegation in their first season of the ABC Motsepe League.

“I am happy and relieved that we managed to escape relegation in a season that was difficult with experienced teams. When I came in, I found a team that was lacking in confidence and almost gave up and I had to work extremely hard to make them believe that they can come out of danger,” said the experienced coach.

The coach, after their second last game of the season, revealed challenges he faces at the ABC Motsepe League side, he said there are no changes, and he will sit down with the management this week to hear about his future in the team.

Komani-Karoo Express contacted the chairperson Jan Draghoender of the team about the season and future of the coach, and he said they were happy that the team would stay in the ABC Motsepe League again next season, but refused to comment about the future of the coach, saying they will sit as management.
