Komani-based side Phoenix
Birds Ladies FC will be playing in the Provincial Sasol Women’s League for the
second successive season next term after escaping the relegation with one game
to play.
The
local women’s football team played in the top division of the female
football in the province for the first time.
The Komani side were promoted alonside NAV Galaxy
Ladies (Buffalo City Metro) to the Coastal Stream of top league after slots were
made available when Gqeberha’s City Lads Ladies were promoted to the National
Hollywoodbets Super League and the dismissal of Birmingham City Ladies FC.
Currently, Phoenix Birds is third from the bottom with
16 points after 15 games played while their fellow newcomers NAV Galaxy are
second from the bottom with seven points between them and Phoenix.
Phoenix Head Coach Ringo Klaas said he is happy and relieved that they
managed to escape relegation in their first season of the Sasol Women’s League.
“I
am happy and relieved that we managed to escape relegation in a season that was
difficult with experienced teams. As a new team we found teams that were here for
some time, and we were lacking in confidence. We started the season without some
of our players because we had playing cards problems,” said Klaas.
Phoenix lost their first game at home in Komani at the
hands of log leaders from Gqeberha Sophakama Ladies in the opening week of the league.
Ironically, the Komani-based side got their first win
in the Sasol Women’s League in Gqeberha when they hammered Madibaz Football 4-1
in the third week of the league.
The Komani side will be playing their last game of the
season in Gqeberha against Volcano Ladies this coming weekend and a win in that
game will take them into sixth place if Golden Stars Ladies fumble in their
last game.
“We want to finish with a win and start preparing for the
next season in high spirit. This season was all about learning everything about
this league and we will come back stronger next season,” said Klaas.
