DUE to the high rise in unemployment and alcoholism in the communities, many children are forced to leave schools as a result of inattentive parenting and lack of being able to study.

This is the reason why three retired teachers from the Graaff-Reinet community have decided to open a special school that will help these children get the education they deserve.

The school aims at helping children with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS).

Most of these children don’t have the chance to learn as they are sometimes seen as naughty or not listening to the teachers and end up either being kicked out of school or leaving the school due to being unable to learn. The teachers, Regina Bosman, Audrey Pietersen and Edith Bosch, see it is as their social obligation to help children with special needs.

The school will start from Grade R to Grade 3 and will be called Thembalethu Elsen.

It has already been registered and will also include a doctor, a nursing sister, a social worker and a psychologist/occupational therapist.

The school is expected to open on January 14, 2019, but is in need of sponsors for material and equipment.

Classes will take place Monday to Friday from 08:00 till 12:00.
