The Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality has allegedly been failing
the residents of Twinsville and parts of Eluxolweni in Hofmeyr, by depriving
them of a reliable supply of water since 2018.

This is according to Jane Cowley, Enoch Mgijima Constituency
Leader, who as a result said the DA will be reporting the municipality to the Human
Rights Commission.

Cowley said since recent months, the municipality had carted
water to these communities in trucks but have since stopped which she believes
is a disgrace.

“Most taps in these communities are totally dry, and
residents must walk for kilometres to find water. This, despite recent heavy
rains that have resulted in full dams and excellent groundwater levels,” said Cowley.

She said municipal officials have opted to drive to and from
a borehole 30km outside of the town twice a day.

“From there, they pump a small percentage of the
required water volume to the village. This does not even cover a fraction of the houses
in the community,” said Cowley.
