MATRIC dance dreams come true – with the help of a fairy godmother or two.
The Red Carpet Initiative, a non-profit project, is aspiring to give as many underprivileged Grade 12 learners as possible a matric farewell dress that will make them feel like a princess for one night. The aim of the project, now in its third year, is to help learners in Komani, who do not have the financial means, to make their matric dance wishes come true.
Red Carpet Initiative organiser, Jozanne Rooi, says, “Launched to enable matric learners to enjoy an unforgettable matric farewell, the initiative aims to provide participants with the full package – all the items and services needed in preparation for the special event. At no cost.”
This includes a photoshoot and transportation to the event on the day.
According to Rooi, their ultimate goal is to afford each matric girl the opportunity to stand out on their special night, despite everything in life that might be holding them back. “We want to show them support and help them face whatever obstacles they may face.”
She added that the community of Aloevale had been very supportive of the initiative, and no stone was being left unturned in an effort to make every aspiring “princess” see her dream come true. This week, Rooi will visit Hexagon High School, where six learners’ matric dreams are set to be touched by her magic wand.
“The Red Carpet Initiative simply aims to embody the famous words: ‘Umtuntu Ngumtuntu Ngabantu’ – a person is a person through other persons,” Rooi says.
