BARBIE dolls in potholes, as well as dolls’ heads, flowers and trees, have become quite a worldwide fun trend among ratepayers who have lost their proper roads, but not their sense of humour.
From the United Kingdom to America, across the Atlantic to South Africa and all the way to New Zealand, fed-up residents pose these dolls or plants in the hopes that authorities will take action and fix dangerous roads.
Having heard of the plight of the Inxuba Yethemba constituents, Pothole Barbie has undertaken to carry the plight of the people to the highest office.
Although Middelburg residents have been rejoicing over the very welcome rain which has fallen since the beginning of 2020, the bearing it has had on the rapidly deteriorating town roads, however, remains a matter of concern.
Deep potholes are not only damaging vehicles, but are also becoming an increasing safety risk as cars are forced to swerve into oncoming traffic lanes in order to avoid driving through potholes. Although the Inxuba Yethemba Municipality’s technical department managed to fill a number of serious potholes in the central business district over the festive season, they simply do not have the funds to repair the estimated 3 000 potholes spread throughout town and residential areas.CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
