NATASHA Pietersen of Government Communication Information System, called a meeting at the Robert Sobukwe Building on March 25 to share her vision of reviving Radio Graaff-Reinet with relevant role players.

The Graaff-Reinet taxpayers, a previous radio Graaff-Reinet chairperson, media representatives, as well as the acting communication official of Beyers Naudé Municipality, Wilca Smith, and a representative from Sentech attended.

Pietersen indicated the necessity of this communication medium to the community and stated that the challenge lay with the licence being allocated to someone who wanted to start a Karoo radio in Jeffreys Bay.

As the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), which is the organisation responsible for issuing licences, did not attend the meeting, it was suggested that Pietersen try to find out if the “lost” license can be recovered.

The old radio Graaff-Reinet served the community in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa.

The next meeting will be open to anyone. A date and time will be shared as soon as Pietersen receives a reply from ICASA.
