IRONMAN has announced that the 16th Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship will be hosted on Sunday, March 29, 2020, in Nelson Mandela Bay.

“We had an incredible event this year with 1 980 athletes taking part, of which 26% were first-timers with 30% of the field being international. Only 8% of the field was from the host city (Nelson Mandela Bay), showcasing the magnitude of the event not only internationally but nationally within South Africa,” said Keith Bowler, IRONMAN South Africa managing director.

“The event always brings a buzz of excitement to the city as each athlete travels down with their loved ones, bringing with them an average of three people, totalling 6 000 people into the city for multiple nights – which has a massive economic impact for the city.

“You can sense how much our residents love this event, as each year we get over 2 000 volunteers wanting to be part of the experience,” added Bowler.

Paul Wolff, IRONMAN South Africa director of operations, said, “The local community does an excellent job of hosting our athletes, from the volunteers to family and friends cheering on the side of the road.

The city takes ownership and the atmosphere is unbelievable.”

General entries to the 2020 Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship will open on Monday, June 24, 2019 at 16:00.
