A BRAND-NEW, albeit small, preschool has opened at Bloemhof.
The farm, situated in the Golden Horseshoe of the Sundays river, used to boast a thriving farm school, but it was unexpectedly closed by the Department of Education about two years ago.
“We were very sad when that announcement came,” said Julian Murray, who lives on the historical farm.
“The implications are that children now battle to make the transition from the farm environment straight into big school, especially being in town and away from home.
“We have realised that we need a facility to prepare these little children to go to big school.”
According to Murray, the preschool is still very informal, having a couple of parents coming in to the school two or three times a week to oversee the children and let them play and draw and read them some stories.
“We’re just hoping to see the little school grow steadily and improve the lives of these children,” Murray told Komani-Karoo Express.
This week, the preschool received a donation of books and toys from Remax Spandau in Graaff-Reinet.
