HOOKER Liyema Mgwigwi has been appointed as Queen’s College Boys’ High first team rugby captain for the 2020 schools rugby season.
The announcement was confirmed by first team head coach, Pierre Jacobs, who also told Komani-Karoo Express that Mgwigwi would be assisted by fly-half Sihlalo Benge.
Both players formed part of a group of three players who went to the United Kingdom late last year in an exchange programme between Queen’s and Kirkham.
Mgwigwi grew up in Bede Location in Mlungisi Township and joined Queen’s College at the age of six. His love for rugby was inspired by his dad, Xolani Mgwigwi, who was a great rugby player too.
“When I was about six, my dad insisted I come to Queen’s even though financially they were not that stable, but he managed to push me through at this school from grade 1-7. I must say my junior school rugby career set the foundation for who I am today and I learnt a lot there from the different coaches,” said Mgwigwi.
Mgwigwi played in Border Rugby Union U/13 Craven Week and also captained Queen’s age group from the U/14s right through to the U/16s.
Now captaining the first team, Mgwigwi is honoured to get this huge opportunity. “I’m honoured to get the same opportunity again this year to lead the team that every Queenian that plays rugby wants to play for.”
Mgwigwi is taking over the leadership duties from Conley Pieterse who completed Grade 12 last year.
“Liyema is a humble young man who I feel has incredible integrity and is prepared to serve others before considering his own needs,” said coach Jacobs.
