Chris Hani District’s South African Football Association president, Sandile Mata, is the new chairperson of the Chris Hani District Sports Confederation (CHDSC), after being elected at this year’s annual general meeting that was held at the Department of Sports in Komani last week.

Mata who is also the head of competition in the South African Football Association in the Eastern Cape was elected unopposed as the new chairperson.

He previously served as the deputy to Benedict Jordan, who has now relocated to the Western Cape.

From the chess background, Siyabulela Ngcibi from Sakhisizwe Local Municipality, Nonkosi Mba from netball in the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality and a true volunteer in disability sport, Mlandeli Jama, also from Sakhisizwe Local Municipality, were elected as the first, second and third vice-presidents respectively at the AGM, where several nominees contested for these positions.

Eastern Cape Sports Confederation chairperson, Mzondeleli Qotoyi, oversaw the electoral process as five new members were elected in the committee for the next four years.

One of the longest serving members of the committee, Mabhuti Mapeyi, from boxing, has been elected as the new general secretary.

Mapeyi exchanges positions with Nicolene van Schalkwyk, who got the treasurer position.

Mata said they would be working on building good working relations with all the stakeholders in the district.

“We intend strengthening the working relations with the Department of Sports Recreation Arts and Culture (DSRAC) in the district and other stakeholders.

“That will assist us to discharge our key mandate, which is to resuscitate the local sports councils in all the local municipalities and develop good understanding with local municipality SPU offices and assist district federations in establishing strong and working structures that represent all areas in Chris Hani District,” said Mata.

Mata also said they were going to talk to SAFA Chris Hani for office space, to provide the new secretary with a place where he can work in discharging the mandate of the Sports Department.

He also said they will engage DSRAC about capacity development workshops, as the district cannot have leaders without a proper understanding of sports.
